Elders section; who is it for?

The senior male members of the Gog Magog Golf Club have a section known as the Elders providing a wide ranging standard of golf, competitions and matches for some 120 active golfers.  Our ethos is fun and fellowship!

Eligibility

  • Open to all men members of the Club aged 55 & over
  • Sense of humour useful
  • Opportunity to golf play with handicappers ranging from 5 to 28
  • There is no fee to join in

Roll ups

  • A roll up is held every Friday at 07.45; we meet in the car park
  • There is no need to notify anyone of your attendance unless it is your first time, when it is useful that you let the Organiser of the Elders know so he can meet you and introduce you
  •  Bring a marked ball; balls are placed in a hat and partners drawn; we usually play in teams of 3 to a stableford format
  • Numbers vary from as few as 12 to as many as 45; depending on the numbers turning up we play one or both courses to ensure everyone is away by 8.30am  and back in the Clubhouse by 12.30pm
  • There are also smaller roll ups on Mondays and Tuesdays

Competitions

  • The rules for all competitions are held in a loose leaf hard backed file in the Lounge Bar
  • To participate in the eclectics golfers sign their names in a book held in the locker room
  • For all other competitions notices are posted and golfers sign up for each event

Competitions for Elders Summer

  • Individual League; leading to a knock out phase
  • Munro Cup – singles knock out
  • Wandlebury eclectic – qualifying event
  • In addition there are two competitions open to senior members of the Club which are organised by the Club; the minimum age varies for these two events

Competitions for Elders

Winter

  • Old Course eclectic – qualifying event
  • Wandlebury eclectic – qualifying event
  • Winter foursomes – draw for partners – high/low pairings
  • Two Clubs & a Putter stableford; usually in late October
  • Winter Texas Scramble; usually last Friday before Christmas

Inter-Club matches

During the summer months we play 19 other Clubs, all bar one on a home and away basis, usually in teams of 16.  In addition we play a mixed stableford with the Ladies in May and a match against them in October.

Each match is organised by a different match captain.  Individuals sign up separately for each match; selection is made to ensure that all who sign up for matches get an equal share of selection.

The Clubs we play are Brocket Hall, Bishop's Stortford, Bourn, East Herts, Mid Herts, Bury St Edmunds, Letchworth, Luffenham Heath, John O’Gaunt, Royal Worlington, Kings Lynn, Menzies, Newmarket Links, Saffron Walden, St Neots, Ramsey, Thetford, Ely City & Girton.

How we help the Club

In addition to a very active golf diary, we support the Club in other ways

  • Providing ball spotters for the Lagonda Trophy competition, held in May and the Open Championship Regional Qualifier held in late June or early July; a great chance to see top quality golfers in action close up
  • Running the Pimms bar on Club Charity day
  • Supporting the Juniors, including a match against them.
  • Escorting Juniors in the Gogs Junior Masters

Social Events

  • Elders & Partners Dinner usually held in February
  • Away day; limited to c40, usually in September
  • Invitation day; limited to 40 pairs, usually held in June

Elders Organisation

The Elders is a society within the Club and is not a separate section and as such we don’t have an Elders Captain.  Instead we have an ‘Organiser’ elected for a 3 year period and he is assisted by a Treasurer, the 19 match captains and the 8 competition organisers.

The Elders Organiser is usually a co-opted member of Men’s Committee.

We have our own Notice Board in the corridor leading to the Men’s locker room – read it to keep abreast of events!
