There is a very active Men’s Section at the Gogs. If you are looking to play competitive golf there is ample opportunity with competitions every Saturday and most Wednesdays throughout the year. Medals on a Saturday often attract up to 150 entrants while Wednesday stroke play competitions can have fields of around 100. In all, there are over 50 Qualifying competitions through the summer season including three prestigious 36-hole events – the Spring Meeting, the 36 Hole Trophy and the Autumn Meeting. On the other hand, because we have two courses, even on a Saturday you can always have a social game with friends if you so wish.
As well as stroke play competitions, we have a range of match play competitions played throughout the year. For example, our Winter League fourball competition is extremely popular – and rarely are you required to play on temporary greens due to the free draining conditions on our chalk downland courses.
For the low handicap golfer, there are several major scratch competitions including our Club Championship, the Woodhead Cup which has been played for since the Club was formed in 1901. Our Scratch team has won the county Scratch League in 3 out of the last 4 years. It is an experienced team, but we are always keen to have new blood to challenge for places.
The Men play around 20 friendly matches against other clubs in the region. These matches are handicap-based so anyone can put their name down to play in them. We also get together with the Ladies to play about a dozen mixed matches. Whilst, of course, we play to win, the matches are ultimately of a social nature with clubs with whom we have formed long standing relationships. Always fun – especially the banter!
Other events worthy of mention include the Gentlemen’s Dinner (usually with a speaker for the evening), Men’s Invitation Day, the Captain’s Away Day and of course Captain’s Day itself – a full day of golf followed by an evening of fine dining, dancing and entertainment.
For those who like to watch top quality golf we hold two major events at the Gogs. In May, the Lagonda Trophy is played for by the top amateurs in the country on our Old Course with past winners including Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Oliver Fisher. In June/ July, on the Wandlebury, we host Regional Qualifying for the Open Championship. Many members volunteer their time to help with scoring, ball spotting and even caddying – a great way to see top class golfers in action up close.
We are proud of our golfing heritage at the Gogs. If the above sounds appealing to you, please consider joining us.
