JUNIORS
We have a happy and vibrant junior section of the Club comprising of some 100 boys and 15 girls with a very wide range of golfing ability. Our aim is to make the game available to as many young people as possible giving them the opportunity to enjoy a sporting activity, to socialise with other young people and to learn a game which is truly ‘the game of a lifetime’.
AGE PROFILE
Eligible for membership are children aged 12 to 18 but we do have the opportunity to accept younger children who have the necessary skills to justify membership. There is also a Cadet Scheme which is aimed specifically at children in the 5 to 11 age group who are beginners, they will be guided and coached in order to achieve a standard that could give them early entry into the junior section.
POLICIES
The Club operates an Equal Opportunities Policy for all members and there are strict guidelines within our Child Protection Policy which also apply to all members, especially those who assist in our junior section. All parents and guardians of our juniors receive a copy of our Policies together with a paper outlining the Code of Conduct and a level of commitment expected from junior members. We do keep records of any medical conditions, allergies etc to ensure we can give support and duty of care at all times.
JUNIOR ORGANISERS
We have both a boys and a girls organiser who work together to create a varied programme of golf for all levels of player. They are assisted, on occasions, by other members and all these individuals will have been subject to a CRB check.
COMMITTEE
There is a Junior Committee which meets around four times each season and these meetings are usually attended by the Captain of the Club, Lady Captain and the boys and girls Junior Captains.
COMPETITIONS
During the season there will be 15 or 16 competitions open to all and 7 major events which are open for CONGU handicap players only. Once a junior has attained a certain level of handicap he or she will be entitled to play in all Club competitions which gives the chance to play competitive golf every week of the year. For the inexperienced golfers the organisers arrange informal games and extra competitions. Most golf clubs hold a Junior Open event and these are great fun and readily published on the junior notice board.
INTER CLUB MATCHES
The Club enter CAGU inter club matches and League competitions each year and the organisers arrange other friendly matches with neighbouring clubs so as to give everyone the opportunity to experience match play golf and play on other courses.
COACHING
This is always available from the Professional Staff at the Club and we do organise some subsidised coaching during the season. To improve your game and your enjoyment money is always well spent on a golf lesson, the Head Professional and both of his assistants are PGA qualified instructors.
HANDICAPS
Inexperienced players will be advised how to obtain a ‘Club Handicap’ which gives them the chance to play in competitions; and advice on how to progress to an official ‘CONGU Handicap’ which then opens up a greater range of opportunities for competitive golf.
COMMUNICATION
Always a problem for both senior and junior members is knowing what is going on at your Golf Club so you do need to look on the Club web site, check your email regularly and read the notice board which is situated in your own Junior Common Room, you will find this next to the Secretary’s office just inside the main entrance to the clubhouse.
JOINING THE CLUB
You just need to call in to the Secretary and ask for an application form, return this when completed and in due course you will be called for an interview/induction meeting ( a friendly occasion ) and things will move quickly from there.
